    • Has its own nervous system that can function on its own
      • Enteric nervous system: governs the function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract
    • 70% of the immune system resides in the gut
    • Is known as the second brain (contains 200 million neurons)
    • Is a barrier to the outside world
    • Is in contact with the food and bacteria we are exposed to daily
    • Keeps us nourished, healthy and free of infections
    • Houses gut microbiota that communicate with our human cells and have the ability to shift:
      • Mood
      • Hormones
